The Lincoln family moves from slave-state Kentucky to free-state Indiana.

1831–1837

Mr. Lincoln explores entrepreneurial opportunities in New Salem, Illinois.

1834

Begins studying the law and enters private legal practice.

1834–1842

Served in the Illinois state legislature, marking the start of his political career.

1837

Establishes a legal practice and begins riding circuit, building a regional reputation.

1846–1849

Serves a single term in the U.S. Congress.

1849

Returns to private law practice, expanding and intensifying his work.

1854

Reenters politics and is defeated in his first U.S. Senate bid, gaining wider attention.

1856

Emerges as a leading figure in the newly formed Republican Party.

1858

Loses the Senate race again but gains national prominence through the Lincoln–Douglas Debates.

1861–1865

Serves as the 16th President of the United States during the Civil War.
